Why Early Intervention Matters – What Parents Can Do Sooner Rather Than Later
Written By: Krista Toomey, MSW
Too often, youth mental health issues go unnoticed until they reach a breaking point. But what if we could step in earlier, before the crisis? That’s where early intervention comes in. At California Youth Services, we focus on reaching young people at the first signs of emotional or behavioral challenges, not just when things fall apart.
Early intervention helps prevent problems from escalating, reduces the need for more intensive services, and equips teens with the tools they need to manage life’s stressors. When teens receive support early, they’re more likely to succeed in school, stay out of trouble, and build stronger relationships.
Tips for Early Intervention:
- Don’t wait for things to get “bad enough.” If you see consistent sadness, worry, or withdrawal, it’s time to talk.
- Use moments of calm to say, “I’ve noticed you’ve seemed stressed, do you want to talk about it?”
- Partner with a therapist if you need extra eyes on how they’re doing.
- Normalize therapy and help-seeking in your household. Teens pick up on your attitude.
