Ringing in the New Year Safely- Safer Alternatives for Your Teens
Written By: Aspen Dyer, ACSW
As the year winds down, many teens look forward to ringing in New Year’s with friends. But parties can also bring risks—underage drinking, drug use, unsafe driving, or regretted decisions. According to recent data, about 32.9% of U.S. youth aged 12-20 report having had at least one drink in their lives. Roughly 13.3% drank in the past month. Among them, approximately 7.6% have engaged in binge drinking in a given month (NIAA, 2025). Meanwhile, nearly 7% of teenagers aged 12-17 met criteria for a substance use disorder (excluding alcohol) in the past year (NCDAS, 2025).
These statistics underscore why a safe, sober New Year’s matters. Substance use at holiday gatherings often escalates: peer pressure is stronger, supervision is thinner, and impaired driving becomes more likely. For teens, even occasional use can have serious short-term risks and long-term consequences.
Safer Alternatives & Tips for a Sober New Year’s for Teens at Home
-
Host a movie marathon, game night, or cooking challenge with the family or trusted friends!
-
Create a “midnight countdown” indoors—fireworks videos, sparkling apple cider or fun "mocktails", music, and dancing.
-
Invite a few close friends over, with clear rules around no alcohol or drugs, so teens feel included but safe.
-
Plan a meaningful ritual: write down hopes for the new year, do a group gratitude sharing, or set collective family resolutions.
-
Encourage volunteering or community events that offer safe, structured ways to stay busy into the night.
-
Talk ahead of time about expectations and what to do if someone offers substances or if they feel uncomfortable.
