Mental Health and Substance Use: How They're Connected in Teenagers
Written By: Krista Toomey, MSW
Many teens who struggle with substance use are also silently dealing with anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma. Substance use can become a way to self-soothe or escape emotions that feel too big to manage. That’s why treating substance use in isolation often isn’t enough, it requires attention to mental health, too.
Tips to Help:
- Notice patterns: Are they using more when stressed, sad, or overwhelmed?
- Talk openly about mental health and ask how they're feeling, not just what they're doing.
- Consider a holistic support program like JADE, or Pathways counseling which integrates emotional wellness into its approach.
When you approach substance use as part of a broader mental health picture, it shifts the goal from punishment to healing. JADE not only addresses drug or alcohol use, but helps teens better understand their emotions, build healthier thought patterns, and take responsibility for their choices with support, not shame.
Mental health support can be life-changing for teens. When they learn that their struggles have names and solutions, they begin to understand that they’re not broken, just overwhelmed. With proper guidance, teens can build coping skills and emotional resilience that will serve them well into adulthood.
