Making The Most of Winter Break
Written By: Aspen Dyer, ACSW
Winter break can be a wonderful chance for parents and teens to slow down, reconnect, and build memories — but it can also bring stress for everyone. Here are some ideas to help you live in the moment and deepen connections while your kids are home.
When the usual schedule is off, try to ground yourself in small, shared moments: cooking a favorite meal together, playing a game, or just talking about what each of you noticed today. Encouraging everyone to put away devices for set periods helps — screen-free time nurtures real conversation and emotional presence. Notice when stress creeps in: maybe from plans, comparisons on social media, or just overload. Use simple breathing exercises or short walks as a family to reset together.
Also, establish small, gentle routines: maybe a shared cup of tea or coffee in the morning, or an evening check-in where each person says one thing they felt grateful for that day. These rituals help anchor the day and remind you what matters. Be flexible: teens might want quiet alone time, so balance togetherness with respect for privacy. Ask your teen what they need: listening without judgement often means more than giving advice.
Finally, as a parent try to model compassion — toward yourself and toward your teen. When you make time for self-care (sleep, nutritious food, movement, fun), you’re showing your child that well-being matters. This winter break, see it not just as a break from school, but as an opportunity to strengthen your family’s emotional resilience and deepen your bond!
