How to Support Your Teen’s Mental Health at Home
Written By: Krista Toomey, MSW
Emotional highs and lows are a hallmark of the teenage years, and while some moodiness is expected, having a stable and supportive environment can make all the difference. As a parent or caregiver, you play a crucial role in creating a home where your teenager feels seen, heard, and safe.
Ways to Support Your Teen at Home:
- Prioritize emotional check-ins. Ask open-ended questions like “What’s been stressing you out lately?” or “How are you really feeling?” Be curious, not critical.
- Create a calm and predictable routine. Structure helps teens feel safe. Regular meals, consistent bedtimes, and family routines promote emotional stability.
- Model healthy coping skills. When you manage your own stress with deep breathing, walking, or talking things through calmly, your teen learns by example.
- Limit judgment and increase support. Instead of jumping to advice or discipline, try validating statements like, “That sounds hard, I’m glad you told me.”
- Be mindful of pressure. Celebrate effort over perfection. Let them know their worth isn’t tied to grades, sports, or how “put together” they seem.
Mental health is shaped by connection, not perfection. Your teen doesn’t need you to fix everything, they need to know you care and that they’re not alone. If your teen is struggling more than usual or isn’t responding to your efforts, seeking professional support may be necessary. California Youth Services is here to provide compassionate counseling and resources tailored to the unique needs of teens and their families.
