Helping Teens Cope with Anxiety and Stress – A Parent’s Guide
Written By: Krista Toomey, MSW
Between academic pressures, social expectations, and the challenges of growing up, teens today face more stress than ever before. It's no surprise that anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns among youth. Learning how to manage stress and anxiety in healthy ways is a crucial life skill that can help teens develop resilience for the future.
Simple tools, such as deep breathing, journaling, and regular physical activity, can be powerful coping mechanisms. Talking to a trusted adult or therapist can also provide relief and perspective. When teens understand that their feelings are valid and manageable, they’re more likely to take steps toward self-care instead of shutting down.
Ways to Help Your Teen Cope:
- Normalize stress by letting them know it’s okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes.
- Model coping by sharing how you handle stress (e.g., exercise, taking breaks, breathing techniques).
- Help them build structure with routines around sleep, meals, and screen time.
- Encourage downtime and activities that bring joy or calm, like music, art, or time in nature.
- Avoid over-scheduling—teens need breathing room in their week.
