Coping with the Holiday Blues
Written By: Krista Toomey, MSW
While the holidays can be festive, they also bring grief, loneliness, or sadness, especially for teens dealing with emotional struggles or family stress. The contrast between expected joy and internal pain can deepen these feelings.
Ways to Support Teens with Holiday Blues:
- Acknowledge their feelings without forcing cheerfulness.
- Create space to talk about what’s hard, not just what’s going well.
- Honor losses or changes in tradition with intentional conversation or rituals.
Support during the holidays doesn’t always mean fixing; it often means sitting with someone in their emotions. If your teen is struggling, let them know they don’t have to mask it for your sake. Being present, validating, and offering comfort, without pressure to “snap out of it,” can make all the difference.
This is also a great time to connect with resources like California Youth Services, which offers counseling programs designed for teens and families. Whether your teen is struggling with sadness, isolation, or unresolved emotions, CYS provides a compassionate, evidence-informed space to process these challenges. Early support can prevent long-term issues and help your teen feel seen, heard, and understood even during the toughest seasons.
