Communication Tips for Parents of Teens
Written By: Krista Toomey, MSW
Parenting a teen can feel like walking a tightrope. One moment they want your attention, the next they want space. However, staying connected through open and respectful communication is key to supporting your teen's emotional well-being. Small changes in how we speak and listen can make a big difference.
Talking with your teen doesn’t have to be difficult, but it does require intention. Clear, calm, and respectful communication can make a significant difference in your relationship and their willingness to open up when things get tough.
Tips for Improving Communication:
- Listen without interrupting or correcting, even if you disagree.
- Replace judgmental phrases like “Why would you do that?” with “Help me understand what happened.”
- Validate their feelings, even if you don’t fully understand them.
- Keep the door open for conversation by checking in regularly, not just during conflict.
- Don’t expect them to always open up on your timeline. Be patient and consistent.
Improving communication takes time, but it’s worth it. At CYS, we help families strengthen their conversations through therapy and workshops that teach skills for listening, conflict resolution, and emotional connection.
At California Youth Services, we know that family dynamics play a significant role in a teen’s mental health. Our counselors often work with parents to strengthen communication patterns and create a home environment where teens feel safe opening up. It's not about having all the answers, it’s about being present and willing to learn alongside your child.
